A Telly Clip

Ladies and gentlemen, for my next trick I will attempt to embed myself in this blog. Or at least, a video of myself.

It's me talking on BBC Breakfast news about how to start writing your first novel, if that's something you were thinking of doing in this lovely, juicy new decade...

Oh dear, if you ever saw me writing you'd probably have a fit... I have a tendency to start off with just a character, and maybe a little bit of plot, and the rest of it seems to turn up part way through. Sometimes I don't even know the ending until I realise that the book is getting rather long and I had better think of something quick before it ends up too long. I did try planning in great detail once, but I was bored with the idea before I got to writing the first sentence. And I've even done the whole thing in a month with Nanowrimo (3 times!), and never did it with more than a character profile or two beforehand. I suppose it's different for everyone...
