Yesterday was the 7Oth birthday of the Hammond Organ.
This means a lot to me, as it should to all jazz musicians, especially keyboard players. Is it the sound of instrument I love, or the sounds of the greats who have played it?
To celebate, why not sit back and listen to Jimmy Smith, undisputed king of the Hammond Organ. Personal recommendations: 'The Cat' (which has blistering Lalo Schifrin band arrangements) or 'Root Down' (a more 'out there' live record).
Happy Birthday Hammond.
